It is easy to procrastinate meditation because it feels like doing nothing. In fact when you are meditating you are doing very little. Just practicing mindfulness and concentrating on your breath. We are busy people, we can’t spend 30 minutes doing nothing, can we?
Being an adult means charting your own course down the river. As you begin to attempt to find your way, you will realize that the river is much stronger than you are. If the current is pulling you away from your course, no matter how hard you paddle you will not be able to get where you want to be. In this situation you have a choice. You can resist the river and spend your energy toward an impossible task. Or you can accept the flow of the river and begin a new journey.
Some things are worth suffering for and some are not. Sometimes it is worthwhile to resist the river and sometimes it is better to go with the flow. But it is important to recognize that the choice is either to flow with the river or to struggle against it. Humans actually like a bit of suffering when we choose it. But we rarely enjoy suffering when we do not choose it.
When we meditate we are exercising our ability to accept the flow of the river. The more we can accept the flow of the river, the more choice we have. We can choose to resist and attach ourselves to our course or we can choose to accept the flow of the river.
Being in control of your life means being able to choose when you resist the flow of the river and when you go with the flow. Only then can you maximize your effort toward the important objectives in your course and enjoy the ride for the rest.
